Construction in the harsh, dynamic marine environment requires overcoming various factors, including changing tides, extremely limited underwater visibility, and moving currents. To address these problems, you need real-time, high-precision guidance technology.
Measutronics offers integrated positioning, guidance, and underwater imaging systems built by industry leaders, such as Trimble, Applanix, and NORBIT. Our solutions maximize your potential during marine construction operations using real-time data and minimize project delays due to errors. Our systems also eliminate the guesswork, enabling operators to place or remove materials and design or grade correctly the first time, mitigating costly rework.
Marine Construction Guidance and U/W Imaging Technologies
Our range of marine construction systems offers versatility across a wide range of applications, from basic barge positioning to intricate multi-machine projects that require seamless integrated data sharing. We understand your workflows and customize our systems to your project specifications for optimal efficiency while meeting reporting requirements.
Our marine construction solutions encompass:
Positioning and Guidance for Barges
Our technology improves construction tug and barge operations guidance by minimizing barge movements, incorporating preplanned vessel placement and streamlining equipment deployment. Tugboat operators can place a barge atop preplanned “footprints” designed with machine reach limitations in mind — all leveraged from the same high-accuracy Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) installed onboard the crane or excavator.
Positioning and Guidance for Dredges
Be it hydraulic or mechanical dredging, our versatile systems guide dredges, clamshell cranes, and excavators in removing submerged materials to design or grade to the permitted depths.
Operators have a real-time view of their machine and the digging tool — cutter head, bucket, or centrifugal pump — relative to the desired grade, as represented by a three-dimensional (3D) surface.
The profile view provides guidance as to where the grade has been, allowing the operator to move the machine forward more efficiently. This tool eliminates high or low spots relative to the design grade, avoiding the need for rework and the risk of leaving behind desired material.
Measutronics systems incorporate rugged, full-constellation GNSS real-time kinematic (RTK) receivers. Utilizing correction messages received from a local base station, virtual reference system (VRS) or satellite-based signal, the system can determine the dredge’s position with centimeter-level accuracy both horizontally and vertically. This feature eliminates the inaccuracies that arise from remote tide gages or manual tide board readings.
Our systems support real-time SONAR inputs, verifying depths achieved and warning of potential cave-in conditions. Users can also generate custom reports that log pertinent data parameters of their choosing.
Positioning and Guidance for Cranes/Clamshells
Streamline marine crane guidance with systems that display a live view of the crane, barge, dredge tolerance, bucket position, bucket depth, and the surveyed and designed surfaces.
Our systems utilize position, boom angle, haul line and closing line drum rotations, and cable lay drum diameters to determine the elevation/depth of the bucket as it closes. This real-time visualization enhances operational efficiency and improves correct task execution.
When placing material, the system’s diking mode feature builds upon the 3D reference surface with each bucketful of material placed, enabling the operator to track progress relative to the target grade. Once the desired grade is reached, the operator clicks a button, marking the bucket’s position as having achieved the grade.
Positioning and Guidance for Marine Excavators
Our systems enable live equipment monitoring to improve excavator bucket positioning accuracy and material removal at the correct depth. You can visualize the excavator, barge, boom, stick, bucket, and bucket tolerance against the designed and surveyed surfaces.
Our marine excavator systems also support an unlimited number of attachments, including augers, pneumatic jack hammers, slurry pumps, demolition shears, and pile driving mechanisms.
Positioning and Guidance for Marine Pile Drivers
GNSS-enabled systems guide marine pile drivers to the correct location to enhance pile positioning and alignment accuracy. The operator can view the suspended pile and its intended design location in real-time and 3D, typically halving placement time while greatly reducing the need for survey crew support. Custom systems utilizing distance lasers are available to address the most demanding placement tolerances.
Our Marine Construction Technology
Besides control and monitoring positioning and guidance systems, we carry:
- GNSS receivers: This equipment provides real-time positioning of barges and heavy equipment, improving the accuracy of structure placement and monitoring machinery movement. In areas where GNSS signals are unreliable, you can select our Inertial Navigation Systems, which are integrated with other technologies to guide equipment placement.
- Robotic total stations: These instruments are ideal for guiding heavy equipment placement, surveying layouts, and monitoring structural work.
How Our Technology Enhances Marine Construction Efficiency
Our positioning and guidance systems optimize key marine construction tasks, improving accuracy and speed.
Building Cofferdams
Our technology supports the creation of these temporary watertight enclosures by accelerating the sheet pile placement procedure, reducing installation time.
Installing Caissons
These prefabricated watertight hollow structures must be placed accurately to provide support or create a foundation for the build. Our positioning and guidance systems, combined with advanced multibeam (MB) sonar technology, enhance correct caisson placement on the seabed.
MB sonar delivers real-time, high-resolution imaging of the underwater environment, allowing operators to verify caisson alignment and settlement during installation. This increased accuracy minimizes rework, potentially saving time and money.
